Concerns Rise as Covid Cases Hit 700, HPA Imposes Curfew

Maldives records yet another alarming number of positive Covid cases, exceeding the 700th mark according to statistics announced last night. Even though a large portion of these numbers are recorded in the Greater Male’ Region, the rise in cases found in inhabited islands is contributing to the fear of the situation getting out of control. Should this happen, the Maldives might have to suffer worse than we could imagine. Right now, the nation is fighting to monitor 7,109 active cases under stressed health care systems.

In regards to the situation, Health Protection Agency has announced a strict curfew to be observed from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. every day in the Greater Male’ Region starting from today until further notice. Citizens are advised to stay home and vehicle movement is also banned during these hours. HPA states that Police will ensure that order is maintained. Further, they will also be issuing permits for those who require to go out for necessary needs and delivery services.

The curfew is an extension of the restrictive measures that were placed a day earlier, directing the closure of all government offices and schools in efforts to eliminate a mass spread of the virus. Inter-island travel is also restricted as of now. Health authorities have raised concerns regarding the possibility of a new variant emerging amid uncontrollable situations.
