According to the newly enacted Police Service act, a Police Appeal Committee be within 30 days from the date of implementation of the Act. The appeal committee is to formed by the Minister of Home Affairs that will undertake the task of probing into appeals into decisions made by the Disciplinary Board of the Police under the advice of the Police Board. No active police offer could serve on the board.
On Monday, the Minister of Home Affairs put together the committee, appointing five members to it. Accordingly, the members are:
- Retired Deputy Commissioner of the Police Mohamed Sodhiq, Dhafthar no: 6613/Male' City.
- Azmeen Rasheed from Banbeyleevilla, GDh. Rathafandhoo
- Fathimath Leena from M. Saljamge
- Minna Nafiz from M. Lilys
- Ahmed Shahid from Bless, Ha. Hoarafushi
Appeals of decisions taken by the Disciplinary Board can be lodged at the committee by the Commissioner of the Police, parties to the case or the defendant. However, the appeal must be lodged within 10 days. Following their review of the decision, the appeal committee can forward the matter to the Police Board if there is an aspect of it that needs to be altered or corrected.
