Launched in 2019, ‘Aharenge Bank Community Fund’ by Bank of Maldives Plc (BML) is aimed at empowering local individuals and non-governmental organizations to contribute to their communities by way of sustainable projects. Under this campaign, the bank provides funding for proposals presenting ideas of community-based sustainable projects. All winning proposals are granted MVR 50,000 to transform their ideas into reality.
One winning proposal in this regard was submitted by Hoadehdhoo Sports from Gaafu Dhaalu Hoadehdhoo for the establishment of a nature park on the north east wetland area of the island. After completion of the project, Dhigemahkoda Nature Park, is now open for the public. The project was initiated to encourage visitors to experience the natural beauty of the area and increase awareness on the importance of protecting the environment for future generations.
Under the project, an 85 feet walkway and a viewing platform was built with the addition of benches and a barbeque area. Moreover, an area to cut fish and dustbins for proper waste management was also established.
Commenting on the project, Mahdhoon Adam from Hoadehdhoo Sports notes that their main focus whilst carrying out the work on the project was to do so without damaging the beauty of the area. He adds that the area will serve the community of Hoadedhdhoo as well as the community of neighbouring Madaveli, which is connected by a causeway. Mahdhoon also expressed the people who extended their support in carrying out the project.
Since 2019, the Bank has provided funding for projects in 40 islands across the country under the Community Fund.
