The Local Council Elections 2021 was contested by contested by a total of 3,34 candidates - 2,264 candidates for the Island Councils and 1,670 candidates for the Women's Development Committee of islands. A total of 273,182 Maldivian nationals were eligible to cast their votes in this election. Voting took place on 10th April in which a 68% of the eligible voting populations turned up to vote.
As per the final results announces by the Elections Commission – the main ruling party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) won the greatest number of seats – totaling to 400 seats from the 804 seats they completed for. The most competitive opposition party, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) secured 325 of the 647 seats they ran for.
Ruling party’s coalition partners Jumhoory Party (JP) won 11 of the 161 seats they ran for, Adhaalath Party (AP) won 11 of the 28 seats they ran for and Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) won one of the 15 seats they ran for.
Other political parties who contested were Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) who won 16 of the 20 seats they competed for and Maldives Labor and Social Democratic Party (MLSDP) won one of the four seats they competed for.
While 600 candidates completed independently, 173 secures the seats they ran for.
