On 9th March, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih constituted the seven-member Police Board as per section 75(a) of the recently enacted Police Service Act (Law No. 34/2020) – appointing the members: Ahmed Fayaz Hassan, Aishath Noora Mohamed, Ali Faiz, Ahmed Nashid, Adam Ibrahim, Hamid Abdul Ghafoor, and Safa Shareef. The Police Board is Board is tasked with overseeing and making decisions pertaining to police matters such as appointing the police commissioner and deputy police commissioners, conducting the vetting process for their appointment, and providing their counsel to the Home Minister and other officials they are legally obligated to counsel.
It was announced yesterday by the Ministry of Home Affairs that member Ali Faiz has been elected as the President of the Board whereas member Ahmed Fayaz Hassan has been elected as the Vice President.
Faiz has served as Chief of Protocol at the President’s Office back in 2012. Prior to this, he also served as the Managing Director of Maldives Inland Fisheries Company (MIFCO). Fayaz has previously served as a member and Vice Chairman of Elections Commission.
Via tweet, Home Minister Imran congratulated Faiz and Fayaz while commenting that the Police Board has a crucial role in shaping police service to maximize the benefit to the public whereas he is confident that the newly elected presidency will lead towards that path.
