Maldives Continues To Steadily Climb Up The Press Freedom Index Each Year

Freedom of expression and information will always be the world’s most important freedom.

The Press Freedom Index is an is an annual ranking of countries compiled and published by Reporters Without Borders since 2002 based upon the organization’s own assessment of the countries' press freedom records in the previous year. It intends to reflect the degree of freedom that journalists, news organizations, and netizens have in each country, and the efforts made by authorities to respect this freedom.

As per this year’s rankings, amongst the assessed 180 countries – Maldives steadily positions itself on the 72nd position – as opposed to the 79th position from last year. As positive climb indeed. It is important to note that Maldives ranked at 120th on the index in 2018 which was attributed to the previous administration’s hostility towards press freedom by Reporters Without Borders. Reporters Without Borders attribute the climb in the ranks by the nation to the current administration’s work on improving press freedom.

Looking at the index as whole, Norway takes first which is following by Finland and Sweden respectively. Eritrea takes the 180th position.
