During a special ceremony held to sight the moon on Sunday night, it has been declared that the first day of the holy month of Ramadan will be tomorrow, 13th of April. The decision was come to by authorities as the moon was not sighted in the Maldives nor any other Islamic country last night – marking today as the 30th and the last day of the month of Sha’ban.
In the month of Ramadan. Muslims all around the world observe a fast from sunrise to sunset. The month begins and ends with the appearance of the crescent moon.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr. Ahmed Zahir, highly encouraged everyone to adhere to the teachings of Islam and increase good deeds as we continue to fast. The Minister also stated that communities will be allowed to perform congregational prayers during Taraweeh – that is in accordance with safety guidelines set forth by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) in the light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
