Just like any other year, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia had donated dates to the Maldives in time for the Ramadan, this year as well. However, whereas Maldives usually receives 50 tons of dates every year, this time it has been reduced to half.
The date received in this regard, is usually distributed amongst the public in a first come first serve basis. In the light of the pandemic last year, the Ministry had prioritized the less fortunate when distributing. This time due to the lesser amount of dates received, the distribution guidelines have changed once again. Accordingly, those who are entitled to receive dates this year are: 10,944 people registered with Ministry as ‘poor’, children at the children shelters: Kudakudhinge Hiyaa & Fiyavathi, people in Home for Special Needs in Guraidhoo and detainees in prisons under the jurisdiction of Maldives Correctional Service.
Distributing of the dates commences today and will continue until 29th April. For people in the Male’ Area, the Ministry in collaboration with Male’ City Council will be distributing the dates at the Islamic Centre. The details of the timings the distribution center will be open can be viewed here.
Remaining islands councils and city councils will be handed over dates for the distribution in those islands and cities by the Ministry.
