Saudi Arabia Gifts 25 Tons Of Dates To The Maldives In Time For Ramadan

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has donated 25 tons of dates to the Maldives, just in time for the holy month of Ramadan. The generous gift was accepted by the Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr. Ahmed Zahir, on behalf of the Government of Maldives. On the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan, Saudi Arabia annually gifts dates to the Maldives and other Muslim nations.

Whilst usually Maldives receives a donation of 50 tons of dates every year from Saudi Arabia, this time it has been reduced to half – which is likely due to the pandemic.

In the Maldives, the dates received in this regard is usually distributed amongst the public – hence the Ministry is expected to start the distribution of dates sometime soon.

Whilst distributions usually take place in a first come first serve basis, during distributions last year, the Ministry had prioritized the less fortunate. According to statistics, nearly 20,000 individuals are presently registered in the country as ‘poor’ with over 3000 of them from the capital, Male’ City.
