The Elections Commission of the Maldives has publicized the final list of eligible voters for the upcoming Local Council Elections. Dated 27th March, as per the list a total of 273,182 will be eligible to cast their votes this time. The final list was formulated with inclusions of those that will turn 18 by 10th of April.
Whilst the Local Council Elections was initially scheduled to be held in April 2020, it has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Hence out of the 273,128 eligible voters, 5,134 of them made it to the list due to this postponement as per the President of the Elections Commission, Mr. Ahmed Shareef.
According to the Elections Commission, this election will be contested by a total of 3,34 candidates - 2,264 candidates for the Island Councils and 1,670 candidates for the Women's Development Committee of islands. It is estimated that this election would require about 735 polling stations that is including additional stations in Male’ City in addition to resorts. However, resorts should request polling stations for the arrangements to be made.
The voting will take place on 10th April 2021.
