Yesterday, an agreement was signed between Addu International Airport Private Limited and Island Aviation Services Limited to commence seaplane operations between Addu Atoll and Huvadhu Atoll. The decision was taken as a stride to develop the tourism industry and other economic activities in the Southern Atolls. It is further predicted that this would increase investment opportunities and job opportunities to southern islanders in their home islands, effectively reducing the need to migrate between islands. It also remarkably aligns with the government’s goals in decentralization of the country.
Apart from boosting the tourism industry in the southern atolls, the commencement of seaplane operations aims to strengthen inter-relations between the southern atolls, especially targeted to increase local trade amongst them.
The ceremony held at Gan International Airport to sign the agreement was attended by Managing Directors of both Addu International Airport Private Limited and Island Aviation Services Limited, Minister of Tourism, his excellency, Dr. Abdulla Mausoom, Minster of Economic Development, his excellency, Uz. Fayyaz Ismail, members of Parliament and members of southern city councils. The Ministry of Economic Development also informed that they were presently in discussion with Island Aviation Private Limited to commence operation of daily flights between Huvadu Atoll an Fuvamulah City.
The President, his excellency, Mr, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih aspires to transform Addu City to an economic hub, whereas the signing of this project falls under the plans during his period in office.
