STELCO Breaks Ground on New Powerhouse Facilities on 3 Islands

STELCO has always been at the forefront of providing efficient solutions to power related issues in the country. One of their priorities of the recent times have been to upgrade facilities and services provided in islands across the archipelago to the same standards to that in the capital of Male’ city. In light of this initiative, STELCO has concluded the ground-breaking ceremonies of 3 new facilities to be built on islands across South Ari Atoll.

AA. Thoddoo

When STELCO took over the services in Thoddoo, 2 youth clubs from the island were already providing electricity via 2 distribution units in locally built engine houses located amidst the local residences. The locations were highly unfavorable and caused many disturbances to locals on the island hence, one of the first steps STELCO took was to relocate the powerhouses further away from the local population.

Currently, the 810 KW engine operated by STELCO provides electricity across the island. Thoddoo being one of the biggest agricultural islands in the nation, STELCO identified the importance of upgrading their facilities to meet the growing demands of development happening on the island. With the grant of a land slot furthest away from the area where locals reside, the company has broken ground on the new powerhouse building that will house a 5 KW engine with enough capacity to fully support future developments.

The new building will not be anything like the old powerhouses that were built on the island. Instead, the new concept of the powerhouse will make it an attractive landmark blending in to the already beautiful islands landscape. Moreover, its functionality will be enhanced with the implementation of the latest technologies deployed in the provision of easy service to the islanders.

The newly built 3-storey powerhouse will have a customer service department on the ground floor, meeting rooms and training facilities for the staff on the first floor and fully fledged second floor with an emergency lockdown facility in light of the recent pandemic experience. The engine house will be designed to block out most of the noise and provide a safe working environment for the staff. Moreover, solar panels will be implemented to make it more environment friendly.

AA. Ukulhas

The growing tourism scene in Ukulhas has stressed the demands on electricity services of the island which is currently being sustained on minimally sufficient resources. Even today, STELCO is working on upgrading the distribution units on the island to minimize power shortages.

As one of the key stakeholders of the upcoming developments on the island, STELCO has broken ground on building a modern facility that can house a 4 MW engine instead of the current 812 KW engine on the island. This building will have a better ventilation, additional safety measures, a quiet powerhouse and solar panels that will generate the inhouse power for the facility. Also, the services of online monitoring and technical support can be introduced upon completion of the new facility by STELCO.

AA. Rasdhoo

The name Rasdhoo has taken popularity as a hot spot for local island tourism and with additional guesthouses being built on the island, STELCO has had to constantly keep upgrading their facilities to cater for growing stress on the electricity load. Currently, a 754 KW engine powerhouse supplies electricity across the island but the building has outgrown the capacity for further development. Therefore, STELCO has broken ground on a new powerhouse that can house a 5 MW engine to be built on the current land slot without disrupting the ongoing operations on the facility.

The new multistorey landmark building will furnish the concept of a safe working environment for the staff with proper ventilation, noise reducing powerhouses for the engines and solar panels across the facility.
