Pattice Which Introduced A Clever Twist To The Traditional ‘Juice Patty’ By Serving Ice Cream In It

‘Juice Patty’ has been Maldivian’s favorite thirst quencher on hot days from all the way back since the introduction of refrigerators in the country. Traditionally, it is a liquid mixture of condensed milk, flavoring essence and water with drops of food coloring that is then poured into miniature clear plastic bags with red strings and then frozen to solid.

So, when ‘Pattice’ was first unveiled, I did not think much to it – because hey, it is just ‘Juice Patty’ right? How wrong was I, and so many others – for the fact that creative duo behind ‘Pattice’ had put a really clever twist to it. They are actually serving homemade soft serve ice cream in a ‘juice patty’ bag – hence the name ‘Pattice’ – a combination of ‘ice’ and ‘patty’.

The owners are two sisters-in-law, Malha Rasheed and Saudhath Solih. Their ice cream ventures began at home – something experimented with and made for themselves which became an immediate hit in the family. It was during the lockdown when they decided to try selling it to see if there was a demand. This was where they came up with using the ‘juice patty’ bags to serve the ice cream as it felt like a more convenient and fun way to just go about it – which really is brilliant because there is a lesser chance of making a mess when you have it.

Sometimes however though, the concept of the way it is served makes it also challenging to sell – as people are reluctant to pay the price for it as they are under the pretense that this is something no different to the traditional ‘Juice Patty’.

‘Pattice’ now offers 8 different flavors that have been curated based on beverage flavors that are popular amongst locals. They can be delivered to your doorsteps and are also up for instant grabs at a couple of shops. Their ‘Dhathuru Pack’ in which these frozen treats are provided in a Styrofoam ice box carefully sealed to last long hours have become a must-have on picnics.

At the commencement of business, the sisters-in-law were hopeful but had no idea they would be as well-received as they currently are. Having been in business for about a year now whilst constantly growing each month hence is a big achievement.

Nowadays, the pair works all day to cater to the large number of orders they receive. In fact, they have actually had to take space out of their living room to create a ‘Pattice Room’ where they could carry out all the work pertaining to the business.

In the future, the duo hopes to open their own ice cream shop. Plans are also underway to go more environmentally friendly. In this accord, they are working on designing biodegradable bags to replace the plastic bags being used now whereas, for deliveries, they already use customized cloth bags.
