Bilateral Relations With Bangladesh Progresses With Signing Of Four Key Agreements Along With Bilateral Talks

On Thursday, the Government of Maldives has signed four important agreements with the People’s Republic of Bangladesh – marking a pivotal point of progress in the bilateral relationship between the two countries. The signing ceremony took place as part of the state visit to Bangladesh by the President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih who was accompanied by the First Lady and a high-level delegation from the Government. It was held at the Office of the Prime Minister of Bangladesh on Thursday.

The agreements which were signed and their details are:

1 - Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Government of the Republic of Maldives and the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh on the Establishment of the Maldives-Bangladesh Joint Commission on Comprehensive Cooperation: Aims to establish a joint commission that will focus on substantive cooperation in a numerous of settings.

2 - MoU between the Government of the Republic of Maldives and the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh on the Establishment of Bilateral Consultations: Seeks to tighten existing bilateral relations and open way for comprehensive and productive dialogue.

3 - MoU between the Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture of the Republic of Maldives and the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, on the Establishment of the field of Fisheries and Pelagic Fishing: Aims to improve the two countries’ relationship on fisheries and to establish a platform for productive dialogue in the area.

4 - MoU between the Government of the Republic of Maldives and the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh on the Establishment of Cultural Exchange Programme (CEP) for 2022-2025

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, presided over the signing ceremony. Prior to this, a one-on-one meeting was held between the two at the Prime Minister’s Office following which bilateral talks were held between the leaders where they explored various areas of cooperation including trade, health, higher education, human resource development, cultural cooperation, regional governance, fisheries, agriculture, tourism and international cooperation.

Concluding the talks, the two leaders expressed their resolve to continue bilateral relationships on a positive trajectory.
