The number of very talented local home bakers who continue to market and sell their products through social media has spiked in recent years – making this an extremely competitive business at this point. To really shine in this aspect hence, one needs to go the extra mile. We took note of Faathy’s ‘Dessert Box’ for having ticked that box – thus we are more than honored to bring you the tale of how she got there.
Twenty-year-old Faathy had found herself interested in two things starting from a very young age: cooking and art. It was not up until she began to attend college that she started experimenting with baking – only to discover that she preferred baking to cooking as it involves a lot of detailed work and precision. As her experimentations continued, interests sparked amongst her friends and they began to buy desserts from her. This encouraged her to test the waters for demand outside of her circle - for it which she shared her home-baked stuff on her social media and voila, there it was!
Dessert has demand, yes. But because there were so many people doing it, Faathy needed to come up with something that stood out amongst it. This is where the concept of a ‘box’ comes in. All goodies baked by Faathy comes in handmade gift boxes – to make the dessert experience something grander. Moreover, they are customized as per customer preference and sometimes is complemented things like roses. According to Faathy, her siblings and family are the hands behind these boxes – but the baking is all her. Sometimes, they also do lend a hand for her when it comes to packing the goodies.
‘Dessert Box’ started with simple baked goods such as cookies and brownies that is transformed to something more with the boxes because Faathy, herself was fairly new to baking. But, as her skills and techniques got better, this was reflected on the business as well. Although Faathy wanted to blend in her interest of art into her dessert – when she started she did not quite know how. But now, you can observe many complicated sweet affairs on the menu now such as cakesicles, cake bars and smash cakes that are elaborately decorated and hand-painted – making it too pretty to even take a bite off of. Even more amazing is the fact all these complex skills and techniques were self-taught.
However, Faathy considers her biggest achievement as her customers – some who had been with her from the very start of the journey.
While Faathy is nearing completion of her final year at college, she is set to continue ‘Dessert Box’ and hopefully expand the business and bake on a larger scale in her own special and unique way – something that we eagerly look forward to.
