‘Nukuraanama Unikuramaa’ Campaign Launched by MIRA

Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) has a launched a new campaign under the name “Nukuraanama Unikuramaa”. The Campaign is aimed to deregister businesses which are not currently undertaking any business activities and also to identify and deregister business that meets the criteria for Goods and Services Tax (GST) deregistration.

Assistant Commissioner General of Enforcement in MIRA, Ms. Fathmath Ameeza, has explained that under the campaign it is possible that businesses which has been unable to start up their operations or even generate an income for legitimate reasons and delays may be deregistered under the Campaign, if they are registered for GST. She has also highlighted the failure of submission of financial statements to the Authority by businesses currently not undertaking any activities. Consequently, this will likely result in a payment of fine.

Under the “Nukuraanama Unikuramaa” campaign, businesses generating an income of less than MVR 500,000 per year, are eligible to apply for GST deregistration. However, this will not apply to businesses operating in the tourism industry and business involved in importing products to the country. MIRA has also stated that they will be exempting fines incurred by businesses qualified for GST deregistration regarding unpaid taxes.
