New Amendments To Armed Force Retirements Plans Has Come Into Force Upon Ratification By The President

The first amendment bill to the Armed Forces Act (Law No. 1/2008) was passed by the Parliament on 8th March 2021, at the 14th sitting of its first session this year. On Thursday, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had ratified the amendment following which the legislation has now been published in the Government Gazette and has subsequently come into force.

The parliament had added two more clauses under Article 30 (B) of the Armed Forces Act surrounding two areas: maintaining the armed forces' structure and prioritizing retaining the most adept officers in the force. Accordingly, the changes brought is expected to further strengthen the retirement procedures of armed forces personnel.

The Armed Forces Act (Law No. 1/2008) of the Maldives stipulates the responsibilities and duties of the country's armed forces, powers conferred to them, how to exercise their powers whilst adhering to set standards, organizational structure, incentives amongst other things. Accordingly, the Maldives National Defense Force is the combined security organization responsible for defending the security and sovereignty of the Maldives.
