During a ministerial questioning session held at the Parliament earlier today, the Minister of National Planning, Housing & Infrastructure answering a question posed by MP Eva Abdulla regarding statements made by the President earlier for the provision of land for the people from Male’ – he noted that the government has the mindset but because there is doubt over the certainty of the plans to the extent that the President desires – he, himself would be sharing the details of the project later on.
Adding to this, Parliament’s Speaker Mohamed Nasheed noted that the government was working on securing a loan for the reclamation project from ING Bank – a multinational financial service corporation based in the Netherlands – whereas as soon as the loan is set, the government would initiate the project. Upon reclamation of land, plots will be carved out and given for people to build their homes as soon as possible.
The government had previously noted that their statistics show that there were 7,073 families are in need of housing in Malé.
Previously it has been stated by Minister Aslam that 1,200 land plots from nearby Gulhifalhu in Kaafu Atoll will be allocated for housing purposes as a way to tackle congestion and housing shortages in Male’.
