Solar Power Systems To Be Installed At 13 Islands In Raa Atoll

Speaking at a campaign event of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) held for the people of Raa Atoll, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has revealed that projects to install solar power systems at 13 islands in Raa Atoll will commence this year. The projects will be opened for tender this month and is part of this administration’s renewable energy transition initiative.

Talking more in detail regarding the projects, the President states that 400 KW solar panels will be installed in the islands Alifushi and Maduvvari – turning 85% of the power generated at peak load to renewable energy. 450 KW solar panels will be installed in Meedhoo - turning 79% of the power generated at peak load into renewable energy. 350 KW solar panels will be installed in the islands Innamaadhoo and Inguraidhoo - completing a full transition to renewable energy in the two islands.
As part of the government’s renewable energy transition initiative, 2.86 MW solar panels were installed across 26 islands last year whereas plans are underway to establish solar power systems in additional 61 islands this year - producing 36MW of power through solar energy.

Solar power generation in the Maldives has increased by three-folds in the past two years. Consequently, carbon dioxide emission has decreased by 72,871 tonnes whereas USD 9.6 million can be now saved from expenses spent on fuel.
