Legacy waste is the waste material that has been collected and kept for years at empty grounds, beaches landfills etc to which more waste is dumped at and collected over the years. Not only does legacy waste occupy large spaces but they are also a breeding ground for pathogens, flies, malodors and the generation of leachate that often leads to water contamination. It also contributes to greenhouse gases and poses the risk of uncontrollable fires.

Recently, there are has been immense public concern over such wastes that take significant portions of islands whereas the government has been undertaking work to clean up such areas and move on to destroy the waste collected in a sustainable manner. In addition to this, effort is also being put to create sustainable waste management centers at several islands by the government through funding from the World Bank.
