Minister Fayyaz To Temporarily Oversee The Functioning Of The Ministry Of Communications, Science & Technology

Following the removal of Mohamed Maleeh Jamal from his post as the Minister of Communications, Science & Technology through a no-confidence motion, the President has yesterday assigned the Minister of Economic Development, Uz. Fayyaz Ismail to temporarily oversee the functioning of the Ministry of Communications, Science and Technology.

Former Minister Maleeh’s no-confidence motion was initiated by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) parliamentarians citing his failure to carry out his responsibilities as the Minister highlighting the failure to prepare any of the regulations entrusted to the Communications Authority of Maldives despite having been in office for two years. They also stress on the failure of bringing down the cost of the internet in the Maldives. Apart from this, it was said that the minister had had actively hindered progress in the communications sector while also being non-cooperative in performing his duties while standing in his position.

In this no-confidence motion, a total of 59 parliamentarians voting in favor of it – passing the motion at the 11th sitting of its first session of 2021. Consequently, Mohamed Maleeh Jamal was removed from his duties as a Cabinet Minister under Article 101 (d) of the Maldives Constitution.
