The Parliament Has Voted In Favor To Remove Minister Jameel From His Position

The no-confidence motion initiated by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) parliamentarians against the Minister of Communications, Science and Technology, Mohamed Maleeh Jamaal was put on the agenda for today’s sitting of the People's Majlis.

With a total of 59 parliamentarians voting in favor of the motion and it being more than the majority of the sitting members, as per the Maldivian Constitution, the Minister can be removed from his post. Only one member voted against the motion whereas four abstained. 

Minister Maleeh has been heavily criticized by the Parliament and also the general public during his time in office.

In this no-confidence motion submitted by MDP parliamentarians, they cite his failure to carry out his responsibilities as the Minister highlighting the failure to prepare any of the regulations entrusted to the Communications Authority of Maldives despite having been in office for two years. They also stress on the failure of bringing down the cost of the internet in the Maldives. Apart from this, it was said that the minister had had actively hindered progress in the communications sector while also being non-cooperative in performing his duties while standing in his position.

Minister Maleeh who was present at today’s sitting denies all allegations made against him.
