Maldives Possibly To Join The Largest And A Leading International Nature Conservation Body

The President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and his Cabinet held a meeting yesterday where they deliberation on a paper proposed by the Ministry of Environment regarding the Maldives becoming a part of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Ultimately, it was decided that the President would go ahead and seek parliamentary consideration on the subject.

Being a membership union, IUCN is composed of representatives from both government and civil society organizations. They are a leading and also the largest international conservation body harnessing the experience, resources and reach of more than 1,400 member organizations from 170 countries from all parts of the world. Democratic in its nature, IUCN brings together the world’s most influential organizations and top experts in a combined effort to conserve nature and accelerate the transition to sustainable development.

Becoming a member of this organization will allow the Maldives with partnerships and networking opportunities, as well as assistance to enhance efforts in the field of conservation of nature. It will effectively enhance the much needed technical capacity in the Maldives towards conservation and sustainability of nature which is of utmost importance for the country at the moment.
