Maldives Awaits Major Developments To Its Existing Sports Infrastructure Via Financial Assistance From India

On behalf of the Government of India, the Minister of External Affairs of the Republic of India has announced the offer of a standalone line of credit of USD 40 million for the development of sports infrastructure in the Maldives. This generous offer was brought to attention during a special event held at Ekuveni track – newly renovated with financing through Indian grant – to celebrate the increasingly strengthening cooperation in the area of sports between the two nations.

The Minister further informs that the agreement pertaining to the will be signed as soon as the formalities stage is completed.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment, His Excellency Ahmed Mahloof highlights the significant challenges in establishing the sports infrastructure the Maldives is currently facing. Namely he mentions the lack of an indoor court to play various sports such as table tennis, basketball, volleyball, netball etc. Moreover, the nation’s main football stadium is also in need of major renovations. Most importantly, he also points out the lack of tracks and indoor courts in the islands.

Hence, the Minister goes on explain that the grant will not only develop the sports infrastructure of Male’ City, but also those of in the many other islands. In this regard, the funds will be utilized to build synthetic tracks and indoor courts in islands such as Addu, Fuvahmulah, Thinadhoo, and Kulhudhuffushi.
