Tourism still seems to be flourishing in the Maldives despite the recent spike in the number of coronavirus cases. Accordingly, statistics from the Ministry of Tourism show that on Sunday, with a total of 4373 tourist arrivals, the country records the highest number of daily tourist arrivals so far this year. From 1st January onwards up until yesterday, Maldives has counted a total of 113,592 tourist arrivals.
As the market looks, Russia takes the first with 25, 548 arrivals, whilst India and Ukraine follow respectively with 24,171 arrivals and 8397 arrivals. At present, 631 tourist establishments are in operation accounting for a total of 43,750 beds.
The second-highest single-day spike in tourist arrivals this year was recorded on 31st January, counting 4,218 arrivals.
With this news, the Minister of Tourism states that the totally recovery of the tourism industry of the island nation is expected by mid-year.
Despite the large number of tourist arrivals, Maldives has maintained a tourist COVID-19 positivity rate under 0.09% since December 2020. The island nation is open to all tourists, provided they have proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken a maximum 96 hours before departure from their original destination. Tourists are issued a 30-day visa upon arrival.
