At a time where the majority of the students are studying online due to the pandemic and where young children are frequently required to access the internet for various purposes, the Ministry of Communication, Science and Technology has initiated the ‘Safer Internet Ambassador’ training program which is being conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of Education.
The purpose of this program is to train and appoint students as Safer Internet Ambassadors who then will continue to take lead in conducting awareness programs for their peers in school. In this regard, the Ministry highlights that it will be easier for children to understand the risks presented if messages promoting safer internet use were relayed to them by those of the same age group rather than adults.
Whilst the training for the first batch commenced with over 15 students participating from the schools in the Greater Male’ Area, in the future the program will expand to schools in every atoll of the country.
Students will be guided in the following areas under the program: privacy and security, cyberbullying, digital friendships and morality in the context of online spaces. Accordingly, participants will be made aware of safe ways to surf and access information on the internet and notify them of the risks they may be presented with while being active in online spaces, in addition to providing them the tools to navigate potentially dangerous situations that may arise.
Meanwhile, the world is set to celebrate Safer Internet Day on tomorrow.
