Maldives To Possibly Join Two Conventions Regarding Road Traffic & Road Signs And Signals

Yesterday, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and his Cabinet held a virtual meeting where they deliberated on the paper proposed by the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation regarding joining the two conventions: Vienna Convention on Road Traffic 1968 & Vienna Convention on Road Signs and Signals. Ultimately, the President came to the decision to seek parliamentary consideration regarding the matter.

Therewith, please find some details regarding both the conventions below for your better understanding of why this would benefit the citizens of this nation.

Vienna Convention on Road Traffic 1968
The convention replaces previous road traffic conventions, with signatory countries recognizing and accepting cross border driving licenses and the legality of vehicles from other signatory countries without re-registration, subject to a standard requirement. However, it is noted that the Maldives proposes to join the convention with a reservation on recognizing the latter.

Vienna Convention on Road Signs and Signals
Prescribes a harmonized system of signs and signals based on the use of shapes, colors, and the use of graphic symbols. This Convention also sets out the requirements for road markings and defines the different types of markings and their colors. Joining this convention would mean that Maldives will be required to standardize road signs, traffic signals and road markings used across the nation according to the provisions of the convention.
