MIFCO To Develop An Ice Plant At Ha. Hoarafushi; A Dream Come True For The Fishermen Of North

To overcome the challenges faced by the fishermen in the northern atolls, it has been announced that a 25-tonne ice plant shall be developed at the northern island of Hoarafushi in Haa Alifu Atoll.

In this regard, on Wednesday, a virtual ceremony was hosted amongst the three parties to the project; Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO), Secretariat of Hoarafushi Council & Champa Brothers (financer of the project) to officially seal the deal. The project which falls in line with the current administration’s pledge to increase the capacity of ice plants in the country by 45% is also the first of its kind in partnership between state organizations and the private sector. It is budgeted at MVR 4.2 million.

Speaking at the ceremony, the CEO of MIFCO, Mr. Ismail Fauzee notes that the project will commence soon in which they vow full completion within 150 days from the date of commencement.

Also addressing the ceremony, President of the Council, Mr. Mohamed Waheed highlights the economic benefits it would bring to the island and the atolls. He also commends how the recent decentralization of councils has created a path for them to resolves issues faced by their beloved islanders without having to depend on the council of which this project is a testament to that.
