On Sunday, Maldives Ocean Plastics Alliance and Parley Maldives marked the collaborative launch of ‘PET Reverse Logistics Project’; an initiative to reduce single-use plastic. Accordingly, a launching ceremony was held at Sea House Restaurant yesterday, which was special guested by the Minister of Environment, Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan.
Local PET bottle producers; Happy Market, Male Aerated Water Company & Island Beverages are in participation in the project whilst on the other hand over 120 cafés, eateries and restaurants will participate in the project. How it will work is pretty is simple. Cafés, eateries and restaurants are instructed to separate used PET bottles by brands which then shall be collected by the specific PET bottle suppliers every single night during the closing hours who will then handover the bottles collected to Parley Maldives for recycling.
It was revealed that prior to the official launch of the project, a trial was run for a period of 45 days at which 4 tonnes of plastics were collected.
Although at present the project is run Male’ City focused, it is looking forward to extending to Hulhumale’ City in the future as well.
Single-use plastic products are one of the main causes of major environmental problems seen in the Maldives. Hence, the island nation is ambitiously working toward phasing out single-use plastic products nationwide by the year 2023.
