Discover Maldivian Folklore with Ooredoo’s Digital Calendar

Ooredoo Maldives has unveiled Rannamaari as the month of September representative in its pioneering Ooredoo Calendar 2025, which is a project that combines technology with Maldivian culture.
Rannamaari is among the most chilling characters in the local folklore. There are tales of a sea demon who came out of the sea every month, in the form of a ship with lights on it, which required the sacrifice of a maiden. This fear was to be broken by the coming of another scholar Abul Barakat-ul-Barbari of Maghreb who read out the Holy Quran during the night. The stanzas sent Rannamaari back to the sea never to be seen again.
Released earlier this year, Ooredoo Calendar 2025 is a reimagination of twelve classic Maldivian folklore characters based on artificial intelligence. The AI based chatbot of Ooredoo gives its customers a new character to talk to every month. Since they have preserved the ancient tales of the region as legends, such as Santhi Mariyambu, through the dark story of Rannamaari, the initiative is a reminder of the traditional stories in a new and exciting manner.
The project can also be discussed in the context of the larger vision of Ooredoo to build a Digital Maldives, which involves technology to preserve the cultural heritage and bridge the generations.
In September, the chilling story of Rannamaari can be explored, and the viewers can communicate with the legend. To learn more, refer to https://ore.do/aifolktales
