Mathiveri to Welcome New Airport Under MACL Development

The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has been officially awarded the contract to develop and operate the first airport in Alif Alif (AA.) Atoll. The project, to be carried out on Mathiveri Island, marks the fulfillment of a key pledge by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

The agreement was signed during the President’s current visit to the atoll. On behalf of the government, State Minister of Finance Hussain Imran Abdul Muhaimin signed the contract, while MACL Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed represented the company.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Muizzu announced that MACL will fully finance and operate the project. He confirmed that 26.5 hectares of land will be allocated for the development, not only for the airport but also for housing and other infrastructure on the island.

“This is a fully viable and resilient project that meets all technical and regulatory requirements,” the President stated, adding that the airport is expected to be completed within 30 months.
Mathiveri MP Hassan Zareer welcomed the decision, noting that the community had long called for an airport. “The people of Mathiveri have been requesting an airport through many administrations, and it has finally been delivered by President Muizzu,” he said.

During his earlier visit to Mathiveri in December, the President highlighted the importance of improved connectivity for the region’s tourism industry. The new airport is expected to enhance access, boost local businesses, and contribute to sustainable economic growth across AA. Atoll.
