Over 1,000 Trees Distributed in Shaviyani Atoll to Boost Food Security

The Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare has delivered 1,159 fruit-bearing trees to four islands in Shaviyani Atoll under its ongoing Food Security Programme.

This initiative is part of the government’s larger plan to boost sustainable food production, support island communities, and reduce reliance on imported food. According to the Ministry, the trees were distributed to both households and offices across the islands.
The breakdown of distribution includes 324 trees to Funadhoo, 378 to Lhaimagu, 254 to Narudhoo, and 203 to Bilehfahi. The types of plants provided include breadfruit, waterapple, moringa, and yam trees.

Minister of Agriculture Dr Mariyam Mariya shared on social media that councils have been requesting support to improve local food supply. She noted that the Ministry’s centre in Hanimaadhoo is actively supplying plants to the atolls.
Earlier in June, 50 breadfruit trees were also provided to Hanimaadhoo Council under similar efforts.

In addition to plant distribution, the Ministry is supporting farmers with technical assistance and working to expand the country’s agricultural sector. Plans are also underway to establish an agricultural economic zone to further enhance food security and climate resilience.
