MWSC Begins Major Water Plant Project in Hulhumale

The Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has begun construction of a major water production facility in Hulhumale. The new plant is designed to produce 10,000 tonnes of water per day once completed.

The foundation concrete for the building was laid in a special ceremony attended by ten MWSC employees who have served the company for over 29 years. They were joined by the company’s Managing Director Abdul Matheen Mohamed, Chairperson Shamhooza Ahmed, and members of the board.

MWSC plans to complete the building before the end of September. Once the structure is finished, it will house two Reverse Osmosis plants, each capable of producing 5,000 tonnes of water per day.

The company highlighted the importance of this new facility in improving the reliability of water services in Male’ and Hulhumale. The goal is to provide sustainable, uninterrupted access to clean drinking water and safe sewerage services for the growing population in the area.

Established in 1995, MWSC is the government’s main utility provider for water and sewerage in the capital. The company currently serves around 200,000 people in Male’ and surrounding islands. It also provides electricity to one island and operates water and sewerage services on three other islands.

Over the years, MWSC has expanded its role beyond utilities. It now designs, installs, and manages its own systems and also manufactures water plants, strengthening its position as a key infrastructure provider in the Maldives.
