In celebration of the sixtieth Independence Day of the Maldives, sixty coconut palms were planted in Hulhumale Phase Two. The event is part of the government’s larger goal of planting five million trees across the country.
The tree planting event was jointly organised by the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare and the Housing Development Corporation. Agriculture Minister Dr Maryam Mariya officially launched the event by planting the first coconut palm.
Officials from the Ministry of Dhivehi Language Culture and Heritage, the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, and HDC attended the event along with schoolchildren and senior citizens who also joined in planting the trees.
Minister Mariya spoke on the significance of the coconut palm as the national tree of the Maldives. She encouraged islands across all atolls to plant more coconut palms and to take advantage of the many benefits they offer. She expressed hope that more communities will join the movement with enthusiasm.
So far, nearly six hundred thousand trees have been planted under the government’s tree planting campaign. The event in Hulhumale stands as both a celebration of independence and a commitment to a greener future.
