New Term Begins as Schools Reopen Nationwide

Schools across the Maldives reopened on Sunday, marking the start of the second term after a 16-day mid-year break. Around 90,000 students have returned to classrooms, entering a crucial period in the academic calendar that runs until December 25.

This return comes as the government gears up to implement a major change to the school calendar. Starting in 2026, the academic year will begin on January 27 — a return to the traditional schedule, reversing the previous administration’s mid-year start.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s government has confirmed the move, which has long been preferred by educators and institutions. The current academic year will conclude with the annual holiday break, from December 28 to January 22.

Of the 90,000 students currently enrolled, about 84,000 attend one of 217 government schools across the country. A significant number are based in the capital: the 19 schools in Malé account for 33 percent of the total student population. Likewise, 21 percent of all school staff are employed in Malé.

The new term begins with schools returning to routine, but changes to the system are already in motion.
