Utheemu Prepares to Host National Day Celebrations

The island of Utheemu in Haa Alifu Atoll is preparing to host the official National Day celebrations this year, following an announcement by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on January 28.

Utheemu Island Council President Abdulla Rasheed confirmed that a special task force has been formed. It includes the council, government institutions, and civil society groups working together to plan the events. He said the government has allocated a budget to support the celebrations, and that people of all ages on the island are actively involved in the preparations.

The council is currently leading efforts to decorate parts of the island, including building a welcome area for visitors at the harbour, developing a children’s park, and carrying out a general island clean-up.

The Ministry of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage is also working alongside the council to organise a range of cultural and community activities for the big day, which falls on August 24.

This year’s celebration aims to reflect the spirit of national unity, with the entire island contributing to the preparations.
