MACL Begins Final Readiness Trials for New VIA Terminal

The Maldives Airports Company Ltd. (MACL) has started an important phase of readiness trials for the new passenger terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA). This step brings the terminal closer to officially opening, beginning with a focus on systems used by national carrier, Maldivian.

The testing is part of the Operational Readiness, Airport Transfer (ORAT) programme, which checks that all equipment, services, and support systems are fully functional before launch. Along with system checks, MACL is also training staff and reviewing operational procedures that will change before and after the terminal opens.
Recent assessments included Maldivian’s check-in systems, boarding pass printing, and related IT operations. MACL staff took part in testing, with CEO and Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed becoming the first person to complete a check-in at the new counters. He was joined by Deputy Managing Directors Mohamed Lam’aan and Mujthaba Latheef, along with other senior officials.

Speaking after the trial, Shareef praised the teamwork behind the effort and noted that preparations will continue quickly. He confirmed the terminal will be inaugurated as part of the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day celebrations.

At first, the terminal will handle international flights by Maldivian, with plans to welcome more airlines ahead of the upcoming tourist season.
