The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has officially begun its contribution to the government’s 5 Million Trees Programme by pledging to plant 100,000 trees. The initiative was launched at a ceremony near the new passenger terminal at Velana International Airport.
The launch event was attended by Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim, MACL Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, and other company officials.
The 5 Million Trees Programme, introduced last year, is the biggest tree planting campaign in Maldives history. So far, over 500,000 trees have already been planted, and pledges have exceeded the original target—reaching 6.3 million trees. The government aims to plant at least two million trees by the end of 2025.
Unlike past efforts, this programme is focused on sustainability. It has been designed to ensure long-term growth and environmental impact. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration has committed to its continuation.
A key goal of the programme is to protect and revive local biodiversity. Ninety endangered tree species native to the Maldives have been identified and are being prioritised.
The government has called on the public to take part in the initiative, encouraging nationwide participation to ensure lasting success.
