President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has issued a Presidential Decree to amend the administrative boundary of Maafaru in Noonu Atoll, officially removing Farumuli from its jurisdiction.
This move reverses a previous decree issued on April 15, 2024, which had included both Farumuli and Kan’dinmahuraa within Maafaru’s administrative area. The latest decree, released on Sunday, was made under the authority given to the President through the Decentralisation Act.
With this update, Farumuli is now designated for tourism development, in line with the Maldives Tourism Act. The amendment has also led to an update in the annex of the Decree on Establishing Inhabited Islands, now published in the Government Gazette.
Tourism development across the atolls remains a key policy of the government. One of the approaches includes assigning nearby uninhabited islands to inhabited island jurisdictions to boost local economic activity. These changes aim to support local councils and improve their financial independence.
Under the Constitution, the Maldives follows a decentralised system, with the President responsible for defining council jurisdictions based on national policies and legal frameworks.
