Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has held talks with India’s Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal to explore ways to deepen economic ties between the Maldives and India.
In a post on X, Minister Saeed said the meeting focused on strengthening trade and investment cooperation, as well as identifying new opportunities for economic collaboration.
The two sides also discussed ways to fast-track several ongoing Indian-supported projects in the Maldives.
Meanwhile, Indian media reports suggest that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit the Maldives on July 26 to mark the country’s 60th Independence Day. While the visit has not been officially confirmed, reports indicate that he may attend special events planned for the occasion.
The Maldives–India relationship has seen improvements following initial tensions at the start of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s term. India is now playing an active role in supporting development in the Maldives.
