Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) has announced several major service expansions this year, marking a key step in improving healthcare access in the Maldives.
Speaking to the Social Committee of the People’s Majlis, IGMH Deputy CEO Dr. Shah Mahir revealed that the hospital is preparing to introduce cardiothoracic surgery, interventional radiology, and a dedicated elderly care unit.
Dr. Shah said open-heart surgery will soon be available at IGMH, which will help reduce the number of patients needing treatment abroad. The hospital will also be able to perform surgeries on the lungs and blood vessels.
Another key upgrade is the launch of interventional radiology—an advanced medical field that allows for diagnosis and treatment using minimally invasive techniques. This will be the first time such a service is offered in the Maldives.
A new elderly care unit will also be introduced, staffed by internal medicine specialists. Dr. Shah explained that elderly patients often face multiple health issues at once, and this unit will help provide faster, more focused treatment.
To support these services, IGMH is expanding its facilities by adding 75 new beds, including 15 private rooms, and a new emergency room for children. Existing wards are being renovated with better temperature control and upgraded patient beds.
These developments are part of IGMH’s wider plan to strengthen local healthcare and reduce the country’s dependence on overseas treatment.
