A major milestone has been reached on the ThilaMale’ Bridge project, with piling work now fully completed. The bridge will link Malé, Vilimalé, Gulhifalhu, and Thilafushi.
Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr. Abdulla Muththalib confirmed in a post on X that all 263 piles have been installed across 68 onshore and offshore sites. He described this as the most challenging part of the construction.
With piling complete, 60.84% of the project is now finished.
The 6.7-kilometre bridge is being built by India’s Afcons company. In April, the bridge saw another milestone with the installation of the world’s tallest precast segment, produced in Gulhi Falhu using the long line method.
The total cost of the project is USD 500 million. It is financed through a USD 400 million line of credit from India’s Exim Bank and a USD 100 million grant from the Indian government.
