The Ministry of Health has confirmed that work on a new Mental Health Hospital in L. Gan will begin within this year. Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim told Mihaaru News that all necessary preparations have been completed and the project will move forward without delay.
The hospital is being developed under India’s Line of Credit, reflecting the Maldivian government’s growing focus on improving mental health services both in Malé and the outer atolls. Mental health issues remain a pressing concern in the country.
The Mental Health Hospital replaces a previously planned Cancer Hospital project in L. Gan, which was proposed during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s term. That project stalled and has now been shifted to the Malé region under the current administration.
Minister Nazim added that discussions on the Cancer Hospital are still ongoing, and efforts are in place to ensure its development in the future.
