President Muizzu Pushes Resort Growth in Underserved Atolls

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reiterated his government’s focus on expanding tourism by developing resorts in several underserved atolls across the Maldives.

In a recent post on X, the President confirmed that the initiative will target Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu, Shaviyani, Thaa, Laamu, and Addu City. This commitment was previously highlighted in his Presidential Address and outlined in his Manifesto.

President Muizzu said the plan will follow a multi-pronged strategy that includes offering concessions, providing incentives, improving public infrastructure, and strengthening marketing efforts. The goal is to attract investment and boost economic activity in these regions.
He also highlighted ongoing upgrades to public transport infrastructure, which will support this new phase of tourism development. More detailed announcements are expected from the Ministry of Tourism and Environment in the coming week.

The administration is also working to strengthen the broader tourism sector. Efforts include using the national airline Maldivian’s wide-body aircraft for long-distance travel and fast-tracking development at Velana International Airport. Additionally, the government has partnered with a well-known European football club to promote the Maldives internationally.

This approach aims to ensure balanced tourism growth and create opportunities in parts of the country that have seen limited development in the past.
