Deputy Speaker Raises Alarm on Low Female Leadership

Deputy Speaker of Parliament Ahmed Nazim has voiced concern over the lack of women in leadership roles across the Maldives.
Speaking at the AFPPD Sub-Regional Parliamentarians’ Meeting on Women Empowerment and Youth Investment, held in the Maldives, Nazim highlighted that women remain underrepresented in decision-making positions, despite their active presence in the workforce.

He pointed out that only three of the 93 seats in the Maldivian Parliament are currently held by women. He stressed that this imbalance needs urgent attention from policymakers.
Nazim also mentioned institutions like Customs, where women make up the majority of staff, yet leadership roles continue to be dominated by men.

He congratulated MP Dr Anaara Naeem on her election to the AFPPD Executive Committee, saying her achievement reflects the Maldives’ potential to lead in gender equality and youth investment.
The two-day meeting, hosted by the AFPPD Standing Committee on Investing in Youth, focuses on empowering women and investing in young people in South Asia.
