President Muizzu Proposes Cash Rewards for Rural Citizens Who Quit Smoking

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has proposed a new initiative to support rural citizens who quit smoking, suggesting they may be given an allowance as an incentive. He shared the idea in a recent social media post, stating that relevant ministers have been asked to study the proposal and submit a paper during this week’s Cabinet meeting.

This move is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to make the Maldives a healthier nation with fewer tobacco users. The President emphasized that strong action is being taken to reduce tobacco use across the country.

In May, President Muizzu approved an amendment to the Tobacco Control Act, which includes a “generational ban” preventing smoking for those born after a certain year. He described the amendment as a comprehensive step in protecting future generations from the dangers of tobacco.
The government has already taken several steps, including a ban on vaping and increased duties on tobacco products, to fight what the President calls a “tobacco epidemic.”

The World Health Organization (WHO) has welcomed the Maldives’ tobacco control efforts, calling them both courageous and important. The WHO also presented President Muizzu with a special award, recognizing his leadership in protecting the younger generation from tobacco use — marking a first for a Southeast Asian country.
