The government is preparing to roll out a new insurance scheme aimed at covering vehicle damages, with a focus on improving road safety in the Maldives—especially in the crowded Malé region.
Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen confirmed that the scheme is expected to launch within the next two months. The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation is working closely with insurance companies to create a more complete package that offers stronger protection for drivers.
The capital remains the most traffic-heavy area in the country. In just the first three months of 2025, police reported 762 accidents—many linked to reckless driving and high vehicle density.
To tackle this, the government is drafting legal changes, including a new third-party insurance policy that will cover damage from traffic accidents. Plans also include improving compensation systems for affected vehicle owners.
This initiative is part of a wider national effort to tighten road regulations and provide financial security for motorists.
