President Muizzu Urges Support for Tobacco Control Measures on World No Tobacco Day

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reiterated his administration’s strong focus on preventive healthcare, urging the public to view recent tobacco control reforms as essential steps toward a healthier Maldives. His statement, shared on social media to mark World No Tobacco Day, described tobacco control as a national priority and a key part of safeguarding public health.
World No Tobacco Day, observed globally on 31 May, was established by the World Health Organization (WHO) to raise awareness about the dangers of tobacco. This year’s theme, "Bright Products. Dark Intentions. Unmasking the Appeal,"focuses on exposing the tactics used by the tobacco industry to attract young users.

President Muizzu highlighted several significant actions his government has taken, including the ban on vaping introduced in 2024 and the recent ratification of the Second Amendment to the Tobacco Control Act. This amendment introduces a generational tobacco ban, which will come into effect in November. Under this policy, anyone born on or after 1 January 2007 will be prohibited from buying, selling, or using tobacco products.
The move builds on earlier measures such as raising the legal age for tobacco purchases to 21. Muizzu emphasized that these steps are not restrictions but progress. “Together, let us unmask the appeal of tobacco and nicotine products,” he said.

In recognition of his leadership in promoting a tobacco-free society, the WHO has awarded President Muizzu a special honour for his efforts in advancing tobacco control in the Maldives.
