A new training programme has been launched in Kudafari, Noonu Atoll, by the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources. Running from 18 to 22 May, the initiative is focused on building skills in value-added fish production and small business management.
The programme combines technical training with hands-on experience, helping participants learn how to create a variety of fish-based products. Technical experts from the ministry are guiding the sessions, ensuring that trainees gain both practical production skills and essential knowledge in running small-scale commercial operations.
Out of the 15 individuals taking part, 14 are women. The ministry highlighted this strong female participation as a key feature of the training, which is being led by experienced professionals and industry specialists.
This initiative is part of a wider national strategy to modernise and diversify the fishing sector in the Maldives. The ministry said similar training efforts are being held across several islands to increase the share of locally caught fish processed into value-added products for export.
Strengthening this area, according to the ministry, will help boost global competitiveness and promote long-term sustainability in the fisheries sector.
