Eighty-three percent of construction at Haa Dhaalu Hanimaadhoo International Airport has been completed, marking a major step forward for one of the largest airport projects in the Maldives.
Operated by Regional Airports, the project is being developed with support from India under a USD 800 million line of credit from the Exim Bank of India.
At a press conference on May 3, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu confirmed that the project is on schedule to be completed by July 31, 2025.
Awarded to India’s Kalpataru Projects in September 2022, the airport expansion includes a new 2.7 km runway, a terminal for 1.3 million passengers annually, a cargo terminal, air traffic control tower, and fuel farm. The new runway is already complete.
The total cost of the project stands at USD 136 million, or around MVR 2 billion.
